Helpful Tips to Help Alleviate and Prevent Eye Strain

by Nov 10, 2020

Spending hours using the computer, reading, playing video games and even driving can tire your eyes out. These activities are visually demanding and can sometimes cause discomfort, headaches, and blurry vision. Other symptoms related to eye strain include light sensitivity, difficulty concentrating, itchy eyes and neck and shoulder pain.

Helpful Tips to Help Alleviate and Prevent Eye Strain

Use these tips to help alleviate and avoid eye strain.

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule

Following the 20-20-20 rule will reduce the risk of dry eyes and eye strain. It allows your eyes to take frequent breaks, keeping them from getting too tired. Look at least 20 feet from your digital screen for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. To avoid forgetting to rest your eyes, you can set alarms or reminders on your phone.

Do the Clock Exercise

This exercise can help avoid headaches, eye pain, and other symptoms of eye strain. Imagine there is a large analog clock a few feet away from you. Keeping your head still, move your eyes to the imaginary nine and then to the imaginary three. Continue moving your eyes to opposite pairs on your imaginary clock for at least five minutes.

Proper Device Placement and Seating Posture

According to the American Optometric Association, you should place your computer monitor 20 to 28 inches from your eyes. The top of your monitor should be at eye level to ensure eye comfort while using your device. You can use glare filters to minimize the glare on your screen and make you more comfortable while viewing the screen.

Make Sure You Are Have the Right Eyewear

Regular prescription eyeglasses are not always adequate for extended computer use. Consult your eye doctor to determine the ideal eyewear for your activity. Your prescription glasses can be made to meet your visual needs and even blog blue light from digital screens.
